Summer Highlands Photo Workshop

Exploring the Fjallabak Nature Reserve around Landmannalaugar, where the landscape has been formed by volcanic activity, is the landscape photographer’s dream come true. The area is known for beautiful mountains, glaciers and old volcanic craters, some with lakes at their bottom and colourful rock formations. The moss growing in the area shows some bright green colours, especially after a good rain shower which makes a great contrast with the black sand. Some hiking with your camera gear in rough landscapes is involved. On this workshop we set our goal to visit many less-known locations out of the beaten path.

Day one, Reykjavik - Veiðivötn.
We start from Reykjavik in the morning, heading to the Veiðivötn area in the center of Iceland. On the way we capture a couple of waterfalls, Háifoss and Granni at the edge of the highlands. Háifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, dropping 120 meters into a deep canyon, and Granni is his next door neighbour. Veiðivörn is a cluster of beautiful lakes, most of them inside old volcanic craters. At the end of the day we head to the Highland center Hotel at Hrauneyjar.

Day two, Landmannalaugar - Hólaskjól.
On day two we head into Fjallabak Nature reserve, which has many beautifull, well-known locations. The Valley of Tears waterfall, Hnausapollur lake which is at the bottom of a volcanic crater, similar to the Ljótipollur lake that we visit also. Landmannalaugar is one of the most famous locations and highly populated with tourists all summer. We continue further east on the Fjallabak East road, travelling through diverse and unique landscapes, through valleys with beautiful lakes and over mountains until we come to Hólaskjól for the night. We stay there for the night in a Mountain Hut, making our own dinner and breakfast in the morning.

Day three, Eldgjá - Langisjór - Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
In the morning we start with a beautiful waterfall only a few minutes hike from Hólaskjól cabins and from there we drive up to Eldgjá canyon and hike to the Ófærufoss waterfall. After that we visit Langisjór, the biggest lake in the highlands with beautiful mountain ranges leading into Vatnajökull glacier. This is a remote area with not so many tourists that we can enjoy for a whole day. For the night we head south to Kirkjubæjarklaustur where we stay for the next couple of nights at Hótel Klaustur.

Day four, Lakagígar.
In the morning we head up to the Laki area or Lakagígar as it is called. Lakagígar is a series of craters which formed on a 25 kilometer long fissure in a huge volcanic eruption in 1783-1784. From that eruption came the great lava-field Skaftáreldahraun which surrounds the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The Lakagígar area holds some unique crater formations, lava-fields and beautiful green moss. On the way back from Lakagígar we visit the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon before heading back to Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day five, Kirkjubæjarklaustur - Fjallabak South - Reykjavik.
The last tay of the tour leads us back into the southern part of the Highlands, Fjallabak South. On this part of the tour we are travelling along the northern side of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, through many different types of landscapes, lava-fields, sand deserts and mountain ranges. One of the unique mountains on this part is the Mælifell mountain, rising like a cone from the sand desert plato and seen from a long distance. Heading onwards towards Emstrur and Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, a great, deep canyon cutting through the Emstrur area by the glacial river Markarfljót. From this area you will get a good view over Eyjafjallajökul glacier, Tindfjöll mountain range and Þórsmörk. We are ending this five days Highland adventure in Reykjavík, expecting to arrive there in the afternoon.
